To me it looks like you want some serious changes in the game engine area, and more or less only in that area, to make the game more complex and advanced. Thing is, doing serious changes in the game engine in that direction would turn Hattrick into a game which it is not.
Hattrick is not the most advanced and complexed football manager game when it comes to tactics, and that has never been our idea either. Hattrick has a charm of having a great simplicity and still be a very competitive and challenging game. As evenlamername said, this game if more than just a game - we also put a lot of effert on the community. He also thought that Hattrick isn't meant to be that serious, more meant to be fun. He's totally right in a way, Hattrick's main goal is to be fun, but we're at the same time trying to be serious. One can put it this way: We take fun very seriously.
Our aim is to keep on developing this game step by step, adding new features and improving those features we already have without losing the simplicity of the game and at the same time increase the challenge in playing Hattrick.
There will of course be improvements and new features to the game engine, as well as to the rest of the game and the community. The game engine is not all that matter for us, the game experience is just as important. The game engine is of course a part of the experience, but so is also the arena viewer, the conferences etc.
Enough about that. What about the realistic part then? Well, of course we try to make Hattrick realistic, but one should never forget that this is a game. In many terms, it's more enjoyable not being realistic and in other terms it's not.
Some say midfield is (too) dominant in Hattrick, but I think it's in fact kind of realistic. Ball possession is very important irl too and the team who has the most ball possession often turns out being the winner. Having 60% ball irl is in fact close to "there's only one team on the pitch".
Midfield will always be an important part of the team, in Hattrick as well as irl. But teams usually don't skip defenders irl which some teams in Hattrick have, that's correct. That's not however not just a matter of defense not being important in Hattrick.
In my opinion the biggest factor is the myth (yes, the myth) about defense not being important. Myths are evil things that sooner or later becomes the "truth", and then it becomes even worse:
- More teams put more efforts in midfield and attack, which leads to:
- "All out offense" tactic becomes more "successful" as many teams skip defense, which leads to
- More teams put more efforts in midfield and attack, and then it goes on an on.
If more teams would go "all out defense" the "all out offense" tactic would not be that successful, cause defense does matter. The reason why EM Tigers is still in the Swedish top league (for I don't know what season in a row) is not their midfield nor their attack. And it's in fact no surprise that EM Tigers has won all four matches against Lokomotiv Lund, which is more or less a "all out offensive"-team.
So, am I just saying that there is no problem at all then? Of course not, but it's definately not only a problem in the game engine. It's more a problem of people putting more efforts in their offense than their defense (which in a way make sense too as it's more fun to score goals). This is in my opinion the main reason behind this problem, but it doesn't mean I like this "phenomenon" any more than you do.
